Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to correct ear deformities. This procedure is performed to reduce the size of overly large ears or improve their shape. Additionally, otoplasty can reposition prominent ears or correct shape alterations, allowing them to adjust more naturally and sit closer to the head.

Although commonly performed on children between the ages of 4 and 14, it is also an option for adults.

Procedure

Otoplasty typically involves making a small incision behind the ear to expose the auricular cartilage. The cartilage is then sculpted and reshaped to achieve the desired form and secured in its new position using internal sutures. In some cases, a portion of the cartilage may be removed to create a more natural appearance. Finally, a small wedge of skin is removed from the back of the ear. The resulting scar is discreetly hidden behind the ear.

Results become noticeable early on and continue to improve over time, becoming definitive after approximately six months. Otoplasty is usually performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the case. However, general anesthesia is recommended for children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the post-surgery recommendations for otoplasty?

During the first few days of recovery, the patient will wear a headband to immobilize the ears. After its removal, a soft band or wrap should be worn for about a month. It is recommended to undergo at least five post-operative therapy sessions, as these contribute significantly to a faster and more effective recovery.

Where are the scars located after otoplasty?

The incisions made during otoplasty are discreetly placed behind the ear, making them virtually imperceptible.

How long does the otoplasty procedure take?

Otoplasty is a brief procedure, typically lasting between 30 and 60 minutes. It is an outpatient surgery, meaning patients can return home the same day. The estimated recovery time is approximately eight days, and sutures are usually removed around 15 days post-procedure.

What is the appropriate age for otoplasty?

Otoplasty can be performed on young children, specifically those aged 4 to 14, who may feel uncomfortable with the size or shape of their ears. It is recommended to undergo the procedure before the child starts school to prevent self-esteem issues due to teasing from peers. However, it is not advised for children under 4 years old, as their ears are still developing. Otoplasty is also a valid option for adults, both men and women, who wish to improve the appearance of their ears.
